There is nothing unusual about the GPW clutch setup. It is almost identical to a CJ2-A. I am assuming that the cable is attached to the thro out fork and that the fork is in place. It is possible that the pivot pin for the fork fell out. It is also possible that the clutch disk rusted fast to the flywheel. I have freed stuck disks already without disassembly, but the process is pretty brutal. If he adjusted the three pressure plate screws too short he also may have a problem.
