[MV] Gaskets, or Joints as I call them.

Hi List,

A very noteworthy, time and money saving tip acquired during my
hand-fitting apprenticeship, too many years ago:

For nearly all low/medium pressure/temperature applications (use judgement
here), a gasket can be made from a cereal box, such as Kellog's Corn
Flakes. The inner surface of these boxes are sealed and they make ideal
jointing.

All paper-type gaskets should be applied with a very thin smear of grease.
Doing this will nearly always remove the need to use non-setting gasket
glue as an additive. Don't forget that no gasket can, or will be effective
unless the two faces being joined are clean, bare metal faces that are true
to each other. Gaskets/compound are never a fix for warped, or damaged
fittings/casings.

This has saved me lots over the years - anyone who has restored old British
bikes can usually tell you a thing, or two about leaks........ :-)

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers

Gavin
