I do realize you are asking about a M38A1, but many things are in common with
the M38, one of which I have, a '52. I've never had my bumperettes off, and
they are pointed down. The photo in my M38 manual, correct to August 1955, it
says, also shows them down . I'm sure I have some photos of some M38A1 that
were "restored" from 20 years ago and I'll see if I can locate any and view
the bumperettes in them...
