All the original shots I've seen of 'factory' WW2 jeeps have them pointing
up, but remember a lot were shipped with the bumperettes loose and
assembled overseas by anyone that could screw up a nut (and a few who
couldn't)

I have commented before that where storage space seemed to be at a
premium, like the Long Range Desert Group stuff, it was quite common to
have them on pointing down, as that means you can use the flat 'top'
surface to store all that extra kit on.
