Hello John:

They are a tight interference fit. About .001-.003" worth.
The block or head is warmed up, 200 degrees +, and the inserts are frozen
via CO2 or some other really cold gas/liquid.
The insert is then pressed in. Generally with an inserter and hammer or
similar.

The insert should be tight enough not to dislodge in use
but not to tight where they can shatter.
