I have to second Ron's query. I know that the Laws of War state that only
those persons wearing a recognized uniform of their countries armed forces
will be accorded the protection of the Geneva Convention. I also know that
the US Army still marks their vehicles in "subdued" national markings.
I've never figured out how we Marines got away with not having something
recognizable on our vehicles. All we have (and this goes back to pre WW2)
is "USMC" and then the 6 digit vehicle number.
Would somebody care to enlighten us?

Thanks!

Bill

Just a thought in passing:

In the same way there is an obligation for combattants to wear a uniform,
and military airplanes and ships must bear their country's identification,
is it not a legal obligation for any vehicle used in combat to bear a
national marking ?

(I knew I should not have slept so much during classes at the Military
Academy ;-)
