The Army has a solution to the lack of trees. (It is slightly faster
than planting a maple seed watering it and waiting for a tree to appear)
Dig a very deep hole put your spare tire at the bottom hook the winch
cable to it then lining the hole with a parachute or tarpaulin fill it
back in. FM20-22 does warn "The sand parachute and sand parachute
deadman have limited holding ability and should not be used when a major
effort is required.
I agree with Gary, in the Army I have never seen a vehicle recover it
self. We used the winch vehicle to recover the less fortunate.
