No idea of the technicalities, but my standard setting for the mixture on
any engine (manual notwithstanding) is to put it fully home and then back
it out one turn. This is nearly always a good starting position for finer
adjustment, and if it is a conventional carb and the screw is backed out
noticeably more than one turn it would run like a dog, which sounds about
right.
