I used plastic pipe as an insulator and re-used the original brass ring,
which was pretty chewed up but straightened OK

Other points to watch are checking that the solder joint to the wire
doesn't protrude far enough to ground on the outer tube, and that the
insulation from the inner column is good enough (or your battery goes flat
overnight) Check the insulation to column with a meter as it is easy to
have just a small earth path.

I replaced the outer column with seamless tube from an exhaust supplier,
and the finished job looks OK, but then you saw it anyway 8-)
