conversion to electric start. He has been keeping the batteries on the deck
as he rarely uses it. I know this is a common conversion so how would any of
you Mule experts suggest I proceed with a storage box? Is there a stock part
available? I'd like to keep it as water tight as possible.

Grove reproduces the original battery box which bolts under the deck. I
have a marine battery box (plastic) stuck into the large tool bag that was
part of the gun kit (reproduction from Friday Canvas) which is then
strapped behind the seat and I ran the wires down the unused seat back holes.

installed does not work but it does start with crossing the exposed wires(
hot wiring ). I don't think he used a military starter button.

No. The original system is a small box that clamps the steering colum. The
box has a toggle switch for run, stop, and start (or is that stop, run, and
start???). Groves kit comes with the little box but uses a conventional key
switch as I guess alot people get confused with the toggle switch and start
it when they meant to stop it, etc. I plan to put a starter button with a
rubber boot in the extra hole next to the original mil ignition switch in
the front bumper.

what is the most common size used, and how do they affect the performance?

Well.... they are hard enough to steer on hard surfaces, that's only going
to make it worse, remember.... there are no differentials on mules!
