I can relate a similar story that was told to me by one of your
countrymen who emigrated out here.

He says that soon after the war, he was doing his "nasho"
and was on an RAF station, he says there were a whole lot of B-17's
sitting around that belonged to the Americans. He had the use of a
Jeep, but with petrol rationing still being in existence he had no way
of fueling it, other than the drain heads on the unloved B-17.
He was very impressed with the performance of the Jeep on 100 Octane
Avgas - but only for a month. The Jeep expired from burned out valves.

My Dad always used to say, that you can play about with "shandying"
fuel but by no more than 5% away from "as supplied".

I do know that my old Holden used to love 5% of 100 octane added to its
petrol tank. It would start easily in winter with no choke.
I disposed of it when the auto trany failed, maybe there is a message
there too?

Regards
Doug
