Shear pins are available from Memphis Equipment.
To check sprag unit:
Engine off.
Jack up one front wheel, shift the Transmission into reverse. Try turning the
wheel in both directions, it should turn backward easily, but not forward at
all. Now shift into first gear. The wheel should turn forward, but not
backward.
According to PS Monthly 408, September 1986, leading causes of sprag failure
are:
A) Let truck roll backward while trans in forward gear, or roll forward while
in reverse gear.
B) Drive away from a stop in second gear (skipping first).
C) shift first to reverse or opposite without first coming to a complete halt.

Usually warning signs are loud "pop" or banging sound, hard to steer, hard to
shift, jumping out of gear.

My friends at Memphis Equip told me that always moving the shifter through
the first and reverse gear positions before driving off will extend life of
sprag greatly.

Hope this helps,
David Doyle
