The first composite lights were plastic. These were used on the
M-151-A2 and appeared on many other MV's such as your M-35-A2. These
plastic lights were rather fragile when used on other vehicles which did
not have the light housing recessed as did the MUTT and the Hummer. The
metal composite light was developed to overcome this and to make
replacement of the main tail light bulb easier. Many of the plastic lights
were replaced by the later metal ones and I have seen everything from M-416
trailers to rough terrain fork lifts with the metal replacement
lights. Vehicles being delivered to the military now have the "new" style
lights.
