Bob and Mark,

Switching plug wires would certainly work...but not on a diesel engine, of
course. Disconnecting the negative battery cable is simple and
straight-forward, but easily reversed. An Army Reserve Engineer unit that I
once belonged to would remove the jumper cable between the two batteries,
after the vehicle was parked in the Motor Pool. You could do that and then
either carry the short section of cable with you, or lock it in the OVM/BII
box. Of course, you would want to be careful removing and re-installing the
cable so as not to damage the battery posts, and to make sure that you had
tight connections. The battery post clamps don't need to be removed...just
the cable.

An old trick I have used is two fold. One-- Disconnect the
negative battery cable and two switch the number one plug
wire and the coil wire at the cap. Both are quickly reversed
and will foil all but the most savvy mechanic who recognizes
the change that quickly.. Course if they tow the vehicle ..
  well thats a different story
