In the whole scheme of things it will allow differentiation between the two
rear axles. Picture 2 axles rigidly connected by a drive shaft. With all 4
axles in place the spiders only differentiate within the singe housing as you
describe. Now remove one axle and you have effectively removed that entire
differential from the drive equation. Considering that both differentials are
still connected with the jackshaft, the spiders will allow the single axle
(opposing axle removed) to travel at ground speed. This is, although not the
simplest, common driveline geometry.
