"locked-up" starters

Once in awhile you gentlemen touch on something I know about...
The usual reason for banging a starter with a
hammer is to seat the brushes one more time
so the starter will turn and the engine will start.
If you think the engine is stuck, either by itself
or with starter stuck in flywheel, turn ignition off
and try to manually rotate engine with a wrench or a pipe wrench on a
pulley.
If the starter is stuck itself, that is can't turn
after all this and a direct jump from a good battery, please remove and
inspect!
Don't try the banging trick on your newer
car or truck as many of them are PM or permanent magnet types and YOU
WILL bust
up the magnets, thereby losing its core value
at exchange time. Much smaller starters...
