Colin,

Thanks for joining in. It is an American tradition to squabble and
disagree. A lack of dissent is a horrible flaw in any society.

The Viet Cong were militia. Osama Bin Laden is the leader of a militia.
The Confederate Army (in the American Civil War) was a militia. There are
many, many more examples. To dismiss militias as fighting forces is
nonsense.

I know it is probally not my place to comment on american problems, but I
have one comment after reading some of the things written about militia
units..(these I take to mean units that are drawn from civilian ranks, and
not on a full time basis)...It may interest you to know that it was a
militia battalion that was to hold the japenese back at kokoda in ww2 and
also some of our successful battles in vietnam and malaya were fought and
won with a large percentage of militia (national servicemen), so we are very
proud here of the ability of our "part time" sevicemen and women...
This is no criticism of anyone...I wanted to just give recognition of how
these men and women can be very well trained and effective soldiers...colin
