It is my understanding that these are (were) called fletchettes, as into
arrow feathers being called fletching, and an arrow maker a fletcher (old
french). Anyway, as I understand it, they were dropped as semi-guided
schrapnel (spelling??). Fins, kept the pointed in forward, and hopefully
kenitic energy would cause bomblett to penetrate soft skinned targets.
Can't testify as to the usefullness of the design. Must have made some sense
or they wouldn't have made so many of them. But on the other hand if they
were such a great invention, why don't we still have them in the inventory??
