CUCV Starter troubleshooting fix

Howdy List,
For a while, I've been battling my CUCV starter. Like other members of
the list, I've had problems with it chewing up flywheels, tearing up
starter motors, etc. I've thought since my mechanic put on a new starter
that is sounded "faster", a much higher pitch to the motor.
As I've know, and he finally realized(I told him it didn't sound right,
but he thought it was just the different starter), it's a 24-volt starter
that externally looks exactly like the civilian starter motor. So, a
12-volt motor running on 24-volt will be spinning too quickly by the time
it hits the flywheel to engage the flywheel correctly.
My mechanic took the 12-volt starter to a alternator/starter rebuild
shop. He replaced the solenoid and the brushes with the 24-volt
parts. According to the shop, those are the only parts different between
the 12-volt and 24-volt starters. (I don't know the price since he did
that work for free since we had been battling this problem for a while)
My starter now sounds "normal". I haven't had a problem, yet, but I've
only had it a couple days. I think this will solve my problem.

later,
Brian Mead
