Jim,
I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but
the compass needle is a magnet. The dash of the duce is steel ( or at least
I believe it is). The needle will be attracted to it.
I set up a compass course one time and used a fire hydrant as a starting
point. Stnading anywhere within 1 meter was close enough to pull the needle
off several degrees. I knew better but didn't think about it at the time. As
is probably your case too.
