I have worked in the HVAC industry for 17 years and would like to add a
little to the "armaflex" thought. Armaflex and other foam rubber type
insulations are easy to bend and glue and do resist heat and water. However
there are cheap imitations on the market now that look about the same but do
not hold up very well. We started using some of these a few years ago only
to find out they melt very easy. I have not seen this cheap stuff in
blanket form yet, but that don't mean it's not out there. The brand names
"armaflex" and "rubatex" are good. There are others but I can't think of
the manufactures right off hand. Here's a couple easy ways to tell if you
have the good stuff.
1. The cheap stuff will melt. Even pointing a torch at it will make it
start to shrink. The good stuff will burn before it will melt.
2. The good stuff is always black (at least all I have seen). The cheap
stuff is sometime gray.

As a note you can buy it in varying thickness'. The thicker the more
expensive.
The down side to armaflex: it will not work as a cushion. If you compress
it, it will not return to it's original thickness. Like the guy said it
would work good under a hood or anyplace where you don't put weight on it.
If you do put weight on it, it will eventually flatten out and loose most of
its insulating qualities. Don't put if to close too high heat either. It
is not suited for steam lines so anything above about 300 degrees will burn
it (watch those exhaust lines). I have some padding that looks like armaflex
but is designed to hold it's shape. We use it pad underground hot water
lines so they can expand at the elbows. If I can find out where to buy this
stuff I will let the list know. It is much better than armaflex for said
purpose, but the only time we have received this stuff is from a underground
pipe manufacture. The commercial insulation supply house don't fool with
it.

Well sorry to use up so much space on one subject. I don't know what most
of you folks do for a living, but if anyone ever has any HVAC question, feel
free to email me off the list. I'm a commercial pipefitter and work on
almost anything that heats or cools with water, steam or refrigerant (that
includes commercial truck AC's).
