During WWII the military used 78 different aircooled engine models in the .5 to 35 HP range, which required 23,000 different parts.

Continental Industrial Engine division, Lyndon Ave, Detroit, proposed 6 standard models, with 800 parts as an alternative.

The engines were to run 1500 hours without major overhaul, burn 70 to 100 octane fuel, temps of -65 F to 135 F, and at elavations of 5000 feet without adjustment.

In February 1952 Continental beat 40 competitors to get the production contract. Production began in 1952 with the first three models, expanding to include all 6 models by 1960.

Hope this helps,
David Doyle
