Well, you can get Flak vests or fragmentation vests as the military
calls them. They'll stop pistol rounds depending on the model. You're
out of luck if you get hit by a rifle round (30 caliber) unless
you're wearing Level IVa (7.62/.308 resistant) or IV (30.06
resistant).

Look at army surplus stores. Depending on the state you're in you can
legally own them as a civie. I've got 3 in my collection of military
gear. 1 Brit (Brit carrier, Post-Vietnam kevlar), one Nato (a Stanag
type similar to the PASGT) and one US PASGT. The most one cost me was
$100 and they were all in great shape.
