Reaching through the wheel for anything other than to flick the turn
signal lever is something I have never done, I considered it to be too
dangerous.

I have considered (blasphemy I am sure) welding a taller shift handle
onto the hi/lo, just tall enough so I don't have to lean down to get
it.
