From a traction point of view, disable the rearmost axle. When one drive
flange is removed from an axle, that axle will have no ability to propel the
vehicle whatsoever and if you hit a small obstacle the tires would have to
be "pushed" across (like the front). Of course backing up creates the same
situation.
There are pros and cons to any design change. For better traction, remove
the propeller shaft section between the differentials.
