    I would be a little concerned if my voltage is always running much over
28.8V. When the batteries have been drained from a lot of cranking, this is
probably OK. But, you really don't want 15+ volts going to batteries that
don't need it for extended periods of time. It will only shorten their life.

    As was pointed out, the clunking is the glow plug relay. The wait light
on these trucks must be on a timer. It comes on when the key is first turned
on, but it does not turn on and off as the glow plugs actually cycle. I had
a little concern about this when I first got my truck, because I was used to
my '88 Crew Cab 6.2, where the light is actually tied to glow plug
operation. I thought maybe this "feature" was only found on the M1010
200-amp systems, but I guess all CUCV's have it, since your M1009 does it
too.
