Hi ALL...
It has been a while since there has been a "real" discussion on the
"hobby"..
Here is a good subject for everyone to get involved in....and say what you
think.. This concerns some of the things we all sell and buy..and sometimes
get "stuck" with..
Mostly it involves common sense..and a bit of a gamblers mentality..
Here is a true story....About a year ago..I sold an engine for a friend..it
was a 151A2 engine...been rebuilt at BARSTOW for the Marines..and is one of
the high output engines they had built - different cam and head...
I can't remember what Jim sold it for.?/ $750 or $850...does not really
matter..
This engine had been from Barstow to the Rocky Mountain Marines at the old
Ammunition Plant and Chemical Plant known as Rocky Mountain Arsenal..It had
been over 20 years in inside and outside storage...
I delivered it to the buyer...not an easy chore really..but..for another MV
nut..no big deal. Months later, the guy mails me and says that there is a
Birds nest in the cylinder.(and other problems from the animal living in
there)... Okay...now what..? Then he says he wants $200 back for the work.??
again..?? for what...?
Of course, the seller - Jim --is he responsible for this.?? Not in my
opinion....
Am I..?? Not in my lifetime...!!
Well..-- behold !! Today, I find out that the transmission in my HMMWV may
need to be rebuilt..this costs over $1000... I bought this engine and
transmission from a dealer here in Colorado. Now - the shoe is on the other
foot.!! Do I go to the dealer and say I want the money for rebuilding the
transmission..and I paid a damsite more than $850 for the unit..it cost me
$3500...
Heck NO....I don't say a word to the guy the unit was purchased from. He did
not cause whatever is wrong.. it is a Government Surplus unit - like the
151A2 engine. We all take our chances with this old cr..I mean stuff..
Suck it up and go on is what I say..and what I have always done for the last
50 years.....
What is the consensus of opinion on this guys..say your piece !!
Carry on..Gene
