Yeah and the US Armor Cav Guys took it from the Brits. The Royal
Armored Corps (first tank corps ever) adopted them because it was the
only soft head gear that worked with an AFV, its associated vision
devices and its associated crew intercom headsets. Crewing armor
meant that you were technically minded, literate and could work with
new and complicated engines and mechanical things. This is back in
the day that Horses were still the prime method of transport for
Armies.

The US Cav guys have the right idea. Where the Rangers thought that
black berets meant something of light infantry, I'm not sure....
