They are probably right. Depending on the rear, a "3-series" carrier is
designed for only up to 3.73 (possibly 4.10, depending on manufacturer). A
"4-series" carrier is required for 4.10 and up. That being the case, the
CUCV should use a 4-series carrier, which cannot be shimmed properly to
mount 3.73 gears. You should be able to do 4.10's, which are definitely
better, but not as good as 3.73's. I cannot recall off the top of my head if
the 14-bolt 4-series carrier will accommodate 4.10's. That will require a
little checking.
