I would think that in the case of 2 wheel trailers you would not need anything,
since
when you break away, the tongue end will go down and drag, there by acting as a
break.
However, on a really steep grade, I suppose that it might take a little bit
before it stopped.

I suspect that most of the Military trailers with 4 wheels have an air tank on
them and
two hoses to connect to the M35. One is Supply and the other Emergency. There
is a special valve that actuates the brakes from the on board tank when the
trailer breaks away
from the truck. This is the system they have on the Dolly Sets.
