Keep in mind that installing a new subpanel is a lot different than
installing a new service to your house.

To do the main panel you will have to pull the meter to cut off the feed to
the panel. You can do that yourself generally but legally you usually have
to get a permit from the county.

There are a lot of books on residential wiring at the local libarary
usually. I'd do some reading there and then find out if you have any
friends who know wiring who can help you also.

You are right that it isn't that difficult and if done right, not at all
dangerous.
