Howdy List and M,

Combining what you have stated with Ian's posting about carbon clogged
intake manifold passages contributing to cold natured starting and poor
gas mileage jogged something in my memory. I once read somewhere (How is
that for an authoritative reference!) that older engines and those that
are idled a lot or lugged in low gear can become carboned up, raising
the octane rating of the fuel needed to keep them running smoothly.
Also, if the motor has ever been rebuilt the heads might have been
milled, thus increasing the compression ratio just a little bit,
resulting in the need for more Octane?

The 318, when used in the M880 series, was a mature design with a well
deserved track record for reliability. It ran properly on the regular
gas available at the time. Perhaps someone on the list with more
automotive or gasoline expertise can comment on carboning up or
deterioration of Octane ratings from 1977 to 2004.
