wonder if the stethoscope rig with long rod on it would help locate these
sounds, I have seen them used to isolate engine noise

Is there such a thing as a highly directional microphone that can be used
for pinpointing sound sources within an engine compartment? Sometimes it's
hard to tell where a particular sound comes from. Being able to isolate the
sounds from each and every component could be very helpful.
