The pinion mounted brakes do work very well. We used to use them when
constructing monster trucks back in the 80s. They do wear on the pinion shaft
bearings a bit. Most folks simpy use a standard GM slide on rotor and GM caliper.
They redrill the rotor and bolt it on the drive flange of the diff. Then they
fabricate a caliper mount out of plate steel and bolt it on the housing. They
work very well and can lock up a drive axle in a second, at least on lighter
monster truck or rock crawler.
