I wouuld consider the 700R4 trans as an option. It has an overdrive as well
as a deeper 1st gear for takeoffs. Its a bolt in swap although you will have
to add a TV cable from the injection pump to the trans. Lots of mid 80s GM
trucks had these including the 4x4s. With the 1009s 3.08 gears you should see a
sgnificant reduction in RPMs at highway. I had an 84 Chev pickup with the
6.2/700R4 combo and it did very well. Drove it for several hundred thousand
miles without problems and even flat towed a Jeep from time to time. Get a good
rebuild intended for a diesel and the correct diesel torque converter and you
should be very happy. Some folks are probably going to tell you that the
700R4 is junk and originally they had problems. They have really been refined
and are a fine transmission for the 6.2.
