It's the Bendix. Install new one. I have seen them on EBay all the time.
Your local auto electric shop should have one also. It's cheaper than a
starter (much less $). If Fly Wheel, it would grind. Make sure bolt in
front starter bracket is there and is holding front of starter in place.
There are 3 bolts total for starter. All 3 are different sizes.

Subject: [MV] M-1009 Starter

Hi Guys,

A problem with my M-1009 that I hope someone can help with! It has been
kind of dragging when I first start it in the morning. The batteries are
both almost new, one two weeks & one six months and they are the 6TL
military batteries. Yesterday after running a couple of errands I came out
of the post office and it wouldn't do anything but make a soft high pitched
whine when I attempted to start it. I had it towed to our local garage and
they said that the bendix was stuck. They freed it up and now it hasn't
failed again at all! They think that it's either the bendix or a bad spot
on the fly wheel. I replaced the fly wheel with a military issue one that I
got from SGM Pantano that was new in the box so I sorta lean towards the
bendix, any thoughts from anyone on the list??

Does anyone have a NOS starter for sale? How about a benidx? Would it be
worth changing the bendix or should I get a spare complete starter and have
the one that's installed now rebuilt? This is the starter that came on the
truck and it's never given me problems until the first start of the day
dragging that just started recently. The alternators are both working fine,
checked them with my Fluke meter.........

As always any help will be most appreciated!

Best Regards,

Ed
