Veggie oil probably works good. We use it for lighting charcoal, it does not
impart petro flavors to the steaks. We use a bit of newspaper 'kindling' to
get it lit, a match to the oil soaked paper get's her going.

Even more primitive would be a wick floating in a bowl of bacon grease.
Maybe a strip of cloth tied in a knot? But could you stand the hunger
pangs?
