I would replace points, condensor and check the cap for a crack.

I don't think its a timing problem, as the vehicle has only done 15,000 Km
from new, and the chain seems fine.

I am pretty sure its a breather problem. Havn'y checked the Distributor, and
will look at that tomorrow.

Any other suggestions ?

Adrian

you have a timing problem. unfortunately it sounds like a worn
timing chain. best way to determine if it is a mechanical problem
rather than an ignition problem is to replace your current ignition
with an HEI, something along the lines of a Mallory you can find at
PAW. If you still have the problem it is probably your timing chain.
also check the play in your distributor, you should have none.

good luck

James

Subject: V8 Starting

Hi
I have a 1970 Russian GAZ 66 vehicle, with a starting problem.

The engine is a 4.2L V8 Petrol engine. (Nothing unusual, just a basic V8
engine, apparently modelled on a Ford V8).

The engine turns fine and occasionaly fires, spluttering and comes to a stop
after 2 or 3 seconds.

Fuel pressure is fine, lots of ignition spark etc. The only odd thing is Oil
in the Air Filter housing. I have been told that it could be blocked Oil
Breathers, but as there are no Oil pipes comong off the rocker box covers,
am at a loss as to where any blockage can be.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

Adrian
