That is a misleading argument as the State and Federal Fuel Tax is a
specific use tax earmarked for the Highway Funds.

As it presently stands the Highway funds do NOT fully cover the expenses of
the State and Federal highway systems. These taxes were conceived as the
fairest way to tax citizens for the highways they use. I doubt that the EU
system of fuel taxes is earmarked only for highway uses.

If we do not want any more public money spent on the roads then we can
eliminate the tax, but I don't think anyone seriously wants to eliminate
funding for the construction and maintenance of the roadways.

When the Government makes far more money on the sale of a unit of petrol
than the refinery companies do, why would they do ANYTHING to change that?
There's no incentive to other than re-election. Other countries,

particularly European ones are getting reamed on taxes. Fuel is up to $6.50,
even $8.00 or more per gallon.
