Hi Jim, Matt and I happened to be in DC for the WWII Memorial Site
dedication in Novembber of 1995. The site is between the Washington
Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial on the Mall. They added soil to the
site from the 15 American Memorial Cemeteries overseas. The American
Battle Monuments Commision is an independant agency of the Executive
Branch of our government and has been in existance since the 20's. Its
purpose is to erect and maintain memorials in the US and Foriegn
countries where our armed forces have served. They have been raising
funds for the WWII memorial since it was authorized in 1994.

The Memorial will be two sided. One side dedicated to the war overseas
and the other dedicated to the sacrifices made on the home front. They
weren't estimating the tiem for start of construction at that time but
these things take a long time to get organized. If you haven't been to
DC lately the Korean War Memorial is worth the trip. The etchings show
vehicles as well as people and it is very moveing. I missed the
Rooseveldt opening by a couple of days but I here it is nice as well.

BFN, Kathy
