Mike,

If you happen to have trouble finding certain seals from the 'ground up' =
(retail sources), you might try a 'top down' approach and contact the =
sales offices of some major seal manufacturers and ask for the =
application guides and/or specs for their seal products. You should be =
able to match up something perfectly, either by dimensions or by =
cross-reference. Here is a good starting point:

Federal Mogul Sales Offices (USA):

Columbus, Ohio=20
(614) 766-5001=20
Indianapolis, Indiana=20
(317) 842-5550=20
Peoria, Illinois=20
(309) 673-6622=20
Southfield, Michigan=20
(810) 354-7700=20

Or, start in the middle: A local bearing or seal supply house may =
already have these books on hand for several different manufacturers. =
Take the seals in and have them match them up.

Good luck,

Alan

Subject: [MV] DUKW (and CCKW) stuff

OK you Dukwsperts,

Spent the weekend removing, dis-assembling, and cleaning the front axle =
from=20
my DUKW. Stuff looks ok, about what you'd expect for a 50 year old =
amphibious=20
vehicle which was not properly maintained. Since I want to have some=20
dependable fun swimming and driving this thing, I need to do some =
maintenance=20
and do it right the first time. =20

My seal search is on. =20

The DUKW inner axle shaft seal on the front axle, GM-3659486, =
G085-3112520,=20
apparently is the only axle seal common to both the DUKW and the CCKW. =
Do you=20
CCKW or DUKW guys (who actually drive their trucks) use NOS seals or are =
there=20
better seals available? If NOS is the way to go, do you have 3 you'd be =

willing to part with and at what price? If there are better seals now=20
available, would you be willing to share the part numbers?

Looks like the DUKW uses the same pinion seal on each of the three =
axles,=20
GM-3675072, G501-0382831. I'm gonna' need four of 'em. =20

The front wheel hubs use an inner bearing seal, GM-3675092, =
G501-0382833. =20
Found two, would like one more.=20

The rear wheel hubs use an inner bearing seal, GM-3675073, H013-0500194. =
I'm=20
gonna' need 5.

If this were a road truck, I'd just take the old seals down to my local =
seal=20
supply house and have them matched with current seals. (assuming they =
are=20
standard size) The trouble is, I'm brand new at this military vehicle =
thing,=20
and the seals on my DUKW look different than any automotive type axle or =

bearing seal I've used before. Could be just the way they made seals in =
the=20
40's, could be just the way they made military seals, or could be =
something=20
special because the vehicle is amphibious. I don't know. =20

Again, should I use NOS or is there something better available from my =
local=20
seal supply house? (and what are the part numbers?) If NOS is the way =
to go,=20
anybody got some of these noted above for sale before I start calling =
the=20
official MV parts suppliers? =20

I was surprised, in looking through my manuals, that the rear axle =
wheel=20
bearings are lubricated with grease. Most (all?) full floating rear =
ends I=20
have previously worked on had the wheel bearings lubricated with oil =
from the=20
differential. (I realize you normally grease the bearings anyway after=20
servicing to provide lubrication until the oil makes it's way out to the =

bearings.) But in the case of my DUKW, there appears to be a second =
seal at=20
the end of the outer bearing retaining nut which looks like it meant to =
keep=20
oil in the spindle. Or is it to keep the inevitable water out of the =
dif oil?=20
Is this a quirk of just DUKW's, or are the CCKW "banjo" axles the same?=20

Speaking of grease, seems to me that boat trailer grease would be =
appropriate=20
for the wheel bearings on my DUKW. Good idea, bad idea,....? Does it =
really=20
matter?

Thanks for the help,

Hoping the water stays out and the grease/oil stays in.
