I responded to the original question, but I'm not all that computer literate,
so maybe it didn't get out. I have had a great deal of success using a
commercial Diesel Engine Degreaser compound. It is made by Benziel Chemicals
here in Birmingham, Alabama, but I am sure a similar compound is available
almost anywhere in the world. It is simply an alkaline compound, not much
different than extremely strong laundry detergent. If you mix this stuff in
a ratio of about 6-8 oz (dry volume) to 5 gallons of water, it will strip the
paint of almost anything. I use one of the little measures that comes with
Tide Laundry detergent as a measure (one per 5 gallons). This works best
when heated in a metal (NOT ALUMINUM) container to about 120 degrees F. It
will strip anything but polyeurathane (sp?) paint in a matter of minutes. I
have also had very good results at room temprature; however it takes longer.
I usually drop a piece in a plastic trash can that I have about 25 gallons
of this stuff sitting in (a sealing lid is nice idea too) and leave it
overnight. The next morning, hose it off with a garden hose and it will
remove the paint to a bright shinny metal. IT WILL NOT STRIP RUST. But it
does a fantastic job on paint.

I have also read in "Classic Auto Restorer" that Crystal Drano can be used;
in a mix of one container of crystals per 10 gallons of water. They say
don't use the liquid type drain cleaner, it must be the crystal type.

Always use care with this mix, as the vapors will consume small dogs within
10 feet. Use heavy rubber gloves and safety glasses. Flush very well with
clean water. It hasn't killed the grass in my yard (yet). DO NOT USE ON
ALUMINUM OR ZINC. Will totally disolve both of these in minutes. Will NOT
etch or harm metal, as alkaline is the opposite of acid, and will stop
reacting when it reaches the metal part.

Prime within hours of stripping, or you will have a solid piece of rust.

Good Luck All
