I usually pronounce it WILL-EZE but I think it is correctly pronounced Will
IS as in "Whatchewtalkin' bout Willis" Remember that TV show? Diff'rent
Strokes. Another commonly mispronounced name that may be of interest to list
members is the maker of the M-1 rifle; John C. Garand. It is not pronounced
GA-Rand. Its like the word parent with a D at the end. My one of my pet
peeves is people calling it "the M-1 Grand" which is even
worse. It was a grand rifle but the man's name was Garand. Also worthy of
correction is the habit of spelling Willys with an ' . "Willy's"
The fella's name was John North Willys. No apostrophy. He never saw an army
jeep in case you didn't know that. I read somewhere that he died clear back
in the mid 1920's. Nothing will ever beat the guy who told me where the name
jeep REALLY came from. It came from the man who invented it. His name of
course was Willy Jeep. He's dead now by the way.
