Not only aircraft are in the Aleutians. I have seen pictures taken by a fellow who was
hired by the Gov. to help clean up the islands in the late 70s/early 80s. It seems that
beacause of the Japanese invasion, a number of airstrips were built there and just left
after the war. Rows and Rows of trucks, with support equipment were left. Because of the
cost to get to them, there they stayed for 30 years till the Feds and the State of
Alaska wanted the islands put back to their natural state. Out came the dozers. Even if
there were any left, the cost is still too high for an individual to get them out.
Except the aircraft and they legally belong to the State of Alaska.
I had the good fortune to be hired by the state to run a rock crusher for the summer of
82. I spent most of my paycheck flying around central Alaska seeing the most incredable
array of vehicles, mining equipment, boats, the list goes on. Most of that stuff is free
if you can get to it.
Again, the cost to get it out is not worth it unless the vehicles are really, really
worth it. I suspect that the future will see more stuff 'found' in Alaska.
To those who might want to go and have an extra seat, let me know, I would be glad to go
back----------in the summertime!!
