Hi again and thanks again for ongoing replies.

Two more questions:

1 - The heat indicator gauge on my '43 Jeep hasn't worked since I bought it
earlier this year and last weekend I finally got around to investigating.
Seems it's not working for a darn good reason - the connection goes 2
millimetres out of the back of the gauge and that's all!

The (original) manual is quite vague on where the connection should go to,
other than to say that it's "connected to a bulb in the engine" and if it's
not operating properly, replace it...

Well it's obviously not operating properly, but is it an electrical connecti=
on?
and where does it connect to? (There's a kind of wing nut on the block, to
the right of, and half way down by the oil filler tube: is that the spot?)

Is there something (bulb?) inside the engine block that may need replacing?

2 - And while I'm up to my elbows in things temperature-related, maybe I
should test the thermostat. Is that something I can take on and off without
special preparation? In other words, would I need to drain the cooling
system and/or replace the pipe-to-cylinder head gasket? And just how
precise does the temperature of the water in my saucepan have to be before
I drop the 'stat in: is it OK to be +/- several degrees?

Thanks for your patience with my "two questions per week"

By the way, are there any surviving Jeep 'oddities'? I've got a small
reference book from the early '70s which has some 'oddity' pics I've seen
elsewhere (the armour-plated Jeep in the Ardennes, I think, and one of the
flying Jeep), but it also has a pic of a Jeep with a faked K=FCbelwagen body=
,
which has a helmeted driver and a back seat officer passenger, both in
German uniforms. Apparently the driver is a dummy and the 'officer' is
actually doing the driving from the back. There's also a pic of the
extended wheel-base Jeep with tracks for snow. Any examples of these still
out there?
