[MV] M38A1 BRAKE SWITCH QUESTION

Hi.

I'm trying to figure out how the $%^&* brake switch attaches to the bottom
of the steering gear box on my '61 M38A1. I've got all the components to
make the horn switch functional through the steering column (I think), but
can't figure out how the "brake switch adapter" works.

The steering column and steering gear box are hollow. At the bottom of the
steering gear box is an internally- threaded hole, which I initially thought
the switch screwed directly into. The switch is actuated via a rod passing
through the column from the horn button. Turns out, the ORD-9 manual shows
an adapter between the switch and the box. So, I bought the adapter. The
switch screws into the bottom of the adapter OK, but how in heck do you
mount the adapter to the box? The OD of the adapter is not threaded, and is
too big to simply slip into the hole in the bottom of the gear box. Even if
it could, what holds the silly thing in place? The ORD shows it installed
from the BOTTOM of the gear box, but could it be that the gear box needs to
be disassembled and the adapter installed from above?

Is it possible that the later-model M38A1s had different steering gear boxes
than the earlier ones? Could Willys (or a previous owner) have slipped in a
CJ-5 part? I know lots of the parts are common, but don't know if the
steering gear box falls in that catagory. I do have a Chilton's manual that
shows a steering column assembly labeled "1955-1972 Jeeps" that looks just
like the ORD-9 assembly diagram for the M38A1.

Maybe my gear box already has the adapter installed, and I just can't see
it. It's not terribly accessible down there. I'd hate to have to remove
the gear box simply to install the switch!

Sigh. I'm so confused.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pete
