Never owned a mule but have plenty experience and frustration with a hard
starting M38A1 and even a two cylinder John Deere popping Johnny. In both
cases when they got flooded the spark plugs were gas fouled and would never
be easy to start the motor. Next time you experience a hard starting
situation, put some fresh plugs in it. Don't choke it at all if it is
hot. And when you shut it off, turn the gas off, if you can and let it
die of lack of gasoline. This should get you by until you can get the
carburetor rebuilt and not flooding when it is hot. If it has a float in
the carb it is probably sticking in the open position.

PS I am in the market for a M38A1 if anyone knows of one that needs some
work and is reasonably priced.

Good Luck
