Convoy to Halls, TN
August 28/29, 1999

CONVOY OBJECTIVE:
The last weekend of August will bring the Mid-South Chapter of the MVPA’s
annual pilgrimage to the former Army Airfield at Halls,TN in support of the
annual airshow and veterans museum there. If you have never seen this
airshow before, it is certainly worth the trip, as there are featured
numerous WWII bombers and fighters, as well as stunt aircraft. Aircraft will
be both on static display and in the air. Scheduled are B-17, several P-51,
Spitfire, Corsair, DC-3, P-40, Yak, etc.
Of course, we will also have the largest military vehicle display in the
Mid-South ranging from tanks, SP guns, halftracks to all types of wheeled
vehicles of many vintages.

If you arrive with a historic military vehicle with the convoy you will be
admitted free into the airshow. Otherwise, admission is $6.00.

Halls is 65 miles north of Memphis and 7 miles south of Dyersburg on US
Highway 51.

CONVOY PROCEDURES:
Military vehicles of all vintages are welcome. Before we leave the assembly
point you will be given your position in the convoy. Please maintain this
position and follow in line all the way onto the air field at Halls where you
will be directed individually to your specific parking area. Sonny Higdon
and George Jones will be on the ground at Halls to direct you to your parking
spot based upon size and era of vehicle you are dirving. PLEASE don’t try to
park without direction, we want to avoid a free-for-all for parking.
ABSOLUTELY NO CIVILIAN VEHICLES WILL BE PERMITED IN DISPLAY AREA FOR ANY
REASON!!
Because of the growth of this air show, and the concern for safety, we
suggest that members towing their vehicles proceed to Halls in advance of and
independently of the convoy, where you will be directed to an unloading area,
and shown where to park your MV.
For those driving their military vehicles, the basic order of march is as
follows: Biggest self-propelled miliary vehicle to smallest. ( While this is
different than the order of march some others use, in the event of mechanical
failure I’d feel more comfortable with a Jeep rear-ending a six-by than
vice-versa!) Watch the vehicles in front and behind you! If either stops,
then you stop. Likewise, if you stop the entire convoy will halt. Should it
be necessary to stop while in route, please pull well clear of the roadway.
Please have your vehicle fueled and all supplies (Don’t forget your lawn
chairs) loaded, and engines running prior to 7:30AM because barring
mechanical trouble the convoy will not stop between Rosemark and Halls. We
intend to convoy at the speed of 45 MPH. If you feel your vehicle cannot
sustain this speed, please let me know in advance, so we can adjust the
convoy speed to accomodate you. While not mandatory, if you are driving or
riding in a military vehicle we ask that you wear khaki or military appearing
clothing, as many of our members feel this adds to our groups historical
appearance.

If you intend to join us convoying to and displaying in Halls please let us
know so we can look for you and provide you with an advantagous display area.
CONVOY ROUTE:
The convoy will depart from David Doyle’s house (directions available by
emailing me off list) at 7:30 AM Saturday August 28. Snacks will be
provided prior to departure for all convoy participants who desire and arrive
by 7:00 AM. (Please let us know at least 3 days in advance if you would like
to join in this fellowship by calling emailing me off list.)

PLEASE DON'T TRY TO JOIN CONVOY IN MOTION!!!!

The convoy will proceed on TN Hwy 14 to TN Hwy 59, then turn left onto Hwy
59. We will take Hwy 59 5 miles into Covington to the intersection with Hwy
384 (East Street), then turn right onto 384.

We will take East Street 2.6 miles to the intersection with US Hwy 51 North,
then turn right onto Hwy 51. This is a four lane highway which we should be
able to use without restricting normal traffic and it will take us all the
way to Halls.

We will exit Hwy 51 22 miles later by taking a right at the Industrial
Road/Arnold Field Exit.

Our return trip will retrace the same route, departing Halls Sunday afternoon
at 5:30 PM. This departure time is subject to revision at the show, so
please stay in contact.

Hope to see ya'll there.
David Doyle
