I just wanted to summarize the answers I got to my question which was:
whether or not I was wasting time with trying Kroil. I really appreciate
your answers. I'm going to try the Kroil today. I sprayed it on a
particulary rusted spring bolt that I was planning on cutting off with a
torch, but then I realized that the attached part is a rather thin peice
of sheet metal and I'm afraid I may cut into the part with the torch and
create further problems.

I've also got several of the other items mentioned; candles, brake fluid,
Marvel mystery oil, atf, etc handy so I'm also going to try and them out
also.

My question was prompted by the fact that I recently acquired some old
farm machinery that I need to dissasemble that is 30's vintage and has
been sitting outside since then, many of the bolts are none standard so I
can't really just hack them off with a torch and go buy some new ones. I
have also got to do some work on a 2 1/2 ton IHC ex Air Force deliver
truck. Fortunately most of my other MV stuff is in pretty good shape
(ie rust free). FWIW, I have absolutely no connection to Kanolabs, I
just bought some of the stuff and was wondering if I made a good choice.

But your answers were very enlightening. Thanks. I'll you know what I
find out from my simplistic testing.

_______________________________________________________________

Coke (as in Coca-Cola). The phosphoric acid in it works wonders.

all penetrating oils (Liquid Wrench and others) are pretty
much the same... Don't forget that there is another step to help
you free your bolts: once you have soaked the threads in
penetrating oil, give the bolt head a sharp rap with a hammer.
The force of the blow of course has to be commensurate with the
size of the bolt!!!

small amount of
regular old brake fluid will do a real good job of cleaning out rust

I've been using it for years and seems to work given enough time and the
rust
isn't too severe.

KROIL IS USED LOCALLY AT THE CAT FACTORIES HERE AND THEY SWEAR BY THE
STUFF

I use LoosenIt because I was able to get it in a gallon can from an
industrial supply co. I think penetrating oil and patience is probably
the two most important tools when working on an 'experienced' vehicle.
I have used Kroil a couple of times as an industrial mechanic. It works
fine.

Use Miller Lite Beer. Lots of it. It tastes great and is less filling.
Then go to work on the bolts. :)

Diesel (you usually can't keep the stuff in even if you want to) and
patience
also seems to work well, heat appropriately applied where possible is
good too.

There is no better penetrant. I just got done unstick my spring shackle
bolts and spring hangers on my M715. Besides brute force, cussing,
and some heat, I used Kroil.

The one trick I have found that works is vibrating the
bolt or nut with an air chisel using a punch head. Take care to keep the
preasure down and protect the threads.

I haven't used Kroil, but I've had excellent results with PB Blaster.

Heat up
the bolt with a torch. Take an ordinary candle (birthday), melt the
candle
into the threads. Then give 'er. I've done it with great success!

.I've had the best results with Dow Cornings "Moly Pene-Lube".
The product should be available at most industrial supply outlets. Its
kind of messy because of the moly (black) but thats what makes it work
so well.

My experience is there is nothing better than Kroil. I know several
folks
that use it regularly in industrial applications. IT WORKS WELL.

In actual fact, Coca Cola works very well for cleaning up data plates.
Its
the carbonic acid.
As an aside, duriing the late 60's college kids were blindly led to
believe
that it also served as n emergency contraceptive!

Here in li'l ol' England.. we use PlusGas. For really stubborn rust, wrap

some cotton wool around the thread and soak it with PG, then leave it
overnight. It hasn't failed me yet .

There is no better penetrant. I just got done unstick my spring shackle
bolts and spring hangers on my M715. Besides brute force, cussing,

Kroil has always worked well for me over the years, have used it for
anything
rusty and had better luck that "liquid wrench" or WD-40.

Kroil is an excellent (Tennessee) product. The people that make it, Kano

Labs, also have 'AeroKroil' in a spray can w/ red capillary spray tip
like
WD-40. I've found this to be a topnotch product.

Marvel Mystery Oil works pretty well. Good old ATF will work in in pinch.
Soak the recalcitrant bolt throroughly, and then let it soak over nite.
If
necessary, do it again.
