I am now in the process of searching for the CAR number on
our project
M38CDN... the front frame rails had been stamped once, but a
grinder (or
heavy sand-blasting) has erased just about all evidence of
the CAR number.
(any ideas on how to get real faint stamping shadows to show
up better?)

                Rej,

I've seen some kind of forensic technique for reading
filed-off weapon serial numbers using what I think was ultra violet or
"black" light and a microscope. You'll have to look around. I checked on
the FBI website real quick, but could only come up with how to do a cast of
a serial number....

Run some key words through some search engines and see what
you come up with.

Richard
